This position is part of the EthosEnergy Performance Center, a 24x7 operation providing remote operational support to thermal and renewable energy facilities. The role focuses on the remote operation of commercial wind farms, managing a variety of operational scenarios—from cold startup to emergency operations during plant upsets. The specialist will use Distributive Control System (DCS) or SCADA computers to operate wind farm equipment, monitor performance, record data, and make necessary adjustments within operating parameters. Responsibilities include dispatching remote personnel when on-site presence is required, assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and contributing to plant improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reliability, regulatory compliance, and safety. The incumbent should be proficient with PC computers and Microsoft Office products, and ensure compliance with all local, State, and Federal regulations and plant procedures.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate commercial wind farms and renewable energy facilities remotely.
  • Make decisions on non-routine or escalated technical issues.
  • Use multiple data sources such as SCADA, plant controls, and data historians to troubleshoot problems with sites and site equipment.
  • Independently prioritize and execute responsibilities for a single trade, group of related tasks, or functional area.
  • Check own work and possibly the work of others; ensure work results meet the highest quality standards and advanced technical competency.
  • Resolve complex technical issues, conferring with leadership as needed; serve as a resource to others in resolving complex issues.
  • Work under limited supervision; be a results-oriented self-starter able to work independently.
  • Prioritize schedules and guide others in task completion within clearly defined schedules set by management.
  • Provide on-the-job skills training to others in complex technical areas.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of electrical theory.
  • Organize and manage multiple projects.
  • Plan effectively and discern problems that need immediate attention versus those that allow more time to resolve.

  • Ensure awareness of and compliance with NERC/CIP requirements applicable to facility and remote operations.

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Good understanding of wind farm performance (thermal, physical, operational, and environmental) including factors that impact performance.
  • Able to recognize off-normal conditions and trends in critical equipment parameters.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills to develop relationships with customers, Plant Support personnel, and Plant Operations personnel.
  • Strong working knowledge of rotating components such as pumps, motors, generators, and field instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Condition Based Maintenance programs and technology applications.
  • Effective English communication and technical report writing skills.
  • Proficiency with various software programs and systems (e.g., MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as database use.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, perform in a team environment, and communicate effectively with others.

Experience

  • Six (6) to ten (10) years’ experience in wind farm operations, renewable energy, or related power generation roles as a Generation/Plant Engineer, Lead Operator, Maintenance Technician, or Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) Specialist. Experience and knowledge in all aspects of wind farm systems and operations.

Education Requirements

  • Required: High School Diploma. Associates degree of Applied Science from technical/vocational school, military service, or equivalent experience. Desired: Bachelor of Science in Engineering, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to do walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, and lifting (up to 50 pounds). Comfortable working a rotating shift schedule. Occasional travel for site visits.
